About the museum

In 1975 the Municipal Corporation of Tamluk opened to the public a collection of antiquities handed over to it by a few local people. In 2000 the entire collection passed from the Municipal Corporation of Tamluk to the Archaeological Survey of India, and the present Archaeological Museum, Tamluk came into existence. The museum is housed on the first floor of a four-storeyed building in the Panskura–Tamluk bus stand area. The antiquities displayed are not from the excavated site of ancient Tamralipta; they are a collection made by amateur archaeologists of the locality, consisting mostly of antiquities from nearby sites such as Natshal, Mahishadal, Contai, Tamluk town and Ichhapur.

The rented museum building, including the super built-up area, measures 4,000 square feet in all. The gallery area totals 2,383 square feet, comprising three galleries and a corridor.

A plot of land measuring 0.18 acre was purchased from the Government of West Bengal on 18 March 2019, where a new building for the museum has been proposed.

An MoU has been signed with the CPWD for the construction of the building, for which an ancient look has been proposed. Work was scheduled to commence on 3 February 2026, following the stone-laying ceremony by Shri Yaduvir Singh Rawat, Director General, Archaeological Survey of India.
