About this monument
The building is situated on a raised ground detached from the surrounding area. Once a Portuguese or Dutch factory was located at the site. After the independence the Clive’s House gradually fell into ruins and finally it was taken over by the squatters. Without evicting these unauthorized encroachers, no positive step for its conservation can be taken. Clive is believed to have built this once celebrated villa at Dum Dum after his victory in the battle of Plassey in 1757. It is a fine cross between Oriental and Georgian styles. Excavation at the nearby playground by the ASI has revealed antiquities and other cultural assemblage ranging from early historic to British periods.
