About this monument
The laterite temple, facing east, belongs to the pancharatna type. It is very significant for several reasons. Firstly, it is the largest of the laterite temples of the Bankura District. Besides a veranda each with a triple-arched façade on its four sides, an ambulatory around the sanctum chamber is also novel. Also, the panels of the Dasavatara and many other sculptures on its east and south walls are an uncommon feature of the period during which it was built. Further, the shape and design of the ratnas on the roof are quite interesting. The central ratna is much larger than the corner ones. While it is octagonal, those are corners are square. All the ratnas are endowed with grace and fine proportion. The temple was built by Raghunath Simha in 1643 A.D.
