About this monument

This synagogue (place of worship of Jewish Congregation) is the largest among such monuments in the east. The synagogue was built by Mrs. Elias Joseph Ezra in memory of her father David Joseph Ezra. It was opened for public view in 1884. Constructed in the Victorian architectural style, the Synagogue comprises a central nave with two side aisles. The pulpit (Tebah) is placed in the centre of the nave. The Kohen conducts the prayer from the pulpit. The vaulted apse is cupied by a raised platform for the Kohen to bless the congregation and to conduct wedding ceremony and perform rituals. The entrance is topped by a mosaic arch which is adorned by Biblical verses and intricate designs. In the centre of the designs is inscribed the name of the Synagogue.
