About this monument

The impressive double storeyed building, now in a badly dilapidated state, represents a fine specimen of colonial architecture prevalent during the 18th-19th century A.D. It was possibly Warren Hasting’s Garden House. The front wall of the building has a stone tablet bearing an inscription reading in this house lived Lord Warren Hasting. The building has an imposing arched portico in front. The front opening leads to the ground floor with a wooden ceiling which has now collapsed. Within the compound of the house are some other buildings formerly accommodating the Office of the Sub-Divisional Officer (Barasat Sub-Division). Though listed by the Government of West Bengal as a protected monument, Archaeological Survey of India has also declared it as a Monument of National Importance.
