The group of temples known as Brindaban Chandra’s Math

About this monument

The group comprises three Vaishnavite temples, viz. Chaitanyadeva, Ramachandra and Vrindabanchandra. The Chaitanyadeva Temple is considered to be the earliest among the jorbangla th temples of Bengal. Its sparse terracotta motifs are of the early 17 century style. In the sanctum chamber are installed the wooden images of Chaitanya and Nityananda. The Ramachandra temple is of the ekaratna type having little difference from the Vasudeva temple at th Bansberia. This resemblance brings the undated Ramachandra to the 17 century A.D. The temple has triple-arched openings on the east and south. The plaques on its body and the ratna pinnacle contain reliefs which represent the zenith of the art style in burnt clay. The Vrindabanchandra is of the atchala type. It is the largest among the three temples at the site. The temple is externally plain but the interior of its porch and the sanctum chamber have beautiful mural paintings. Unfortunately, the paintings are steadily in the process of disappearance. The temple was built by Narayan Chandra Mallik in 1810 A.D. Ganganarayan Sarkar of Barabazar; Kolkata restored the temple in 1838 A.D.
