About this monument
This double storeyed grand building is standing at the junction of Hare Street and Strand Road. It was designed by the city Magistrate C.K. Robinson. The construction is carried on between 1840 and 1844. After construction of the building was complete, it was dedicated to the memory of Charles Metcalfe, who officiated as Governor General of India from March, 1835 to 1838. th Facing the Ganges on the west, the building reflects the British Imperial Architecture of the 19 century. It is raised on a solid basement and surrounded on all four sides by columns and colonnades. Thirty huge Corinthian Columns, as found in the Tower of the Winds of Athens, support a huge entablature. Since the entrance, approached by a giant flight of steps, has been closed the building currently offers entry into it through a portico on the east. The architectural design of the Metcalfe Hall inspired the builder of the B.N.R. House in Kolkata.
