About this monument
Not far from the Court Building on the strand, an enclosed area contains Danish Cemetery in two separate plots. One of them was meant for the Roman Catholics and the other for the Protestants. The extant graves are well preserved and well maintained. The earliest of these graves date back to 1787 A.D. The tomb of Col. Krefling, the Danish Chief and Director, who died in c. 828 A.D., was buried here. The Danish Governor, Hohlenburg, after his death in c. 1833, was interned in this cemetery. The famous author of the Lepcha language Dictionary, General Mainswaring was also buried here.
