About this monument
The Residency Building or Palace of Dupleix is situated in a picturesque setting on the western bank of the Ganges. It was constructed in 1812 A.D. by a French architect for the use of the French administrators of the erstwhile French colony, Chandernagar. The inner part of the Palace was built earlier while the outer part was added later. The Palace, a typical French Villa, is a single storeyed building with a portico by a row of pillars. The roof has balustrated parapet interrupted in the middle of the front side by a pedimental arch. The building has two colonnaded verandahs on its southern and northern sides. Two wings project from either end of the portico. The building at present houses the Institut de Chandernagar, a museum, a library and a ready room.
