About this monument
The monument is situated near Talganga which is at the border of Chandannagar. The mausoleum is of a Dutch lady who had married Thomas Yeates, a British national. She married Peter Bruys before her marriage with Thomas Yeates. From her two pre-deceased husbands she inherited a huge property including a garden known as Ayesha Bagh. Her body was laid in this garden. The mausoleum which was built to house the grave is raised on an octagonal platform. The platform is approached from every cardinal direction by a staircase. Externally double storeyed, the mausoleum recalls baroque style as developed in France and Venice. It is covered by a ribbed dome on a low drum. The dome is surmounted by a lantern which replicates the mausoleum. The bronze bell, suspended from the ceiling, has been removed. The displaced epitaph on a plaque was composed in memory of Mrs. Yeates.
