About this monument
This brick built temple on a large laterite plinth was erected to enshrine the tutelary deity of the Mallas. Among the ekratna type examples, the temple is unique of its kind. The temple is much celebrated for the ornamentation work which embelish its wall. The ornamentations are mainly on terracotta plaques set upon the wall. The temple has covered porch with a triple-arched openings on the east, south and west sides. The façade of the temple has scenes depicting Krishnalila, Ramayana, Mahabharata and Puranic stories. Dasavatara, dancers and singers, social and hunting activities are also depicted on the temple. The temple was built by Durjana Simha in 1694 A.D. Chaitanya Simha, a successor of Durjana Simha, mortgaged the image of Madan Mohan to one Gokul Mitra of Bagbazar to rescue himself from his acute financial crisis.
